The show themed ‘Beyond the Ordinary: Everyday Life in Malawi’s Largest Refugee camp’, combined photography with poetry to tell stories about life at the camp.
In an interview during the launch on Sunday in Lilongwe, Branches Art event organizer, Daniel Wegner said: “We are convinced that photography and poetry together are powerful tools to tell people outside Dzaleka about life in the camp without endorsing the usual stereotypes.
Our art focuses on the positive aspects of life, the strong sense of companionship, intercultural solidarity and the great mix of cultures.”
John Kazadi, one of the artists who showcased his photos at the event, said the exhibition and the positive response he received gave him confidence to believe in his abilities and talent despite his status and circumstances.
The event aims to raise K1 million to supporting community projects at Dzaleka which hosts close to 34,000 refugees and asylum seekers.
