From Dzaleka to Australia: Young Artist Rebuilds Life with a Brush

Ezra, an 18-year-old artist originally from the Dzaleka Refugee Camp, is beginning a new life in Australia—and he’s bringing his passion for art with him.

Growing up in the camp, Ezra learned to draw and paint using whatever tools he could find. Art became his escape, a way to dream beyond the borders of hardship. Now, in a new country filled with different sights and sounds, he’s using his creativity to tell his story.

One of his favorite subjects? Cockatoos—bright, bold, and completely new to him. For Ezra, they symbolize freedom, peace, and a life with new possibilities.

With the help of a local Australian art program that supports refugee youth, Ezra is now sharing his work with the community, using his talent to bridge cultures and inspire others.

His journey is a reminder of the strength, creativity, and hope that so many young people from Dzaleka carry with them—wherever they go.
