The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged refugees and asylum seekers in Malawi whose circumstances have changed in their home countries to consider voluntary repatriation, calling it the most sustainable long-term solution.
According to a communiqué obtained by Yetu FM, those willing to return can register free of charge at the Dzaleka UNHCR office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays or with camp management on Wednesdays during working hours.
UNHCR highlights that voluntary repatriation allows returnees to contribute to their home countries' development and removes their refugee status. Since the exercise began in June 2023, a total of 360 individuals from 82 households have safely returned to Burundi, Rwanda, and Somalia.
