Dzaleka Faces Food Crisis as WFP Warns of Possible Suspension of Food Assistance

Dzaleka Refugee Camp — The World Food Program (WFP) has raised alarm over a looming suspension of food assistance at Dzaleka Refugee Camp if urgent funding needs are not met. According to Simon Denhere, WFP Acting Country Director in Malawi, the agency requires approximately $10 million USD to maintain its food support operations.

In an interview with Yetu FM, Denhere pointed to growing global conflicts that have strained donor priorities and diverted resources away from Dzaleka’s long-standing humanitarian needs.

“If we fail to secure about 10 million US dollars, refugee food assistance will be further reduced by May 2025,” Denhere warned. “Assistance has already been slashed by 75%, leaving refugees with only 50% of their daily food needs.”

In response, the WFP, together with the Government of Malawi and development partners, is exploring interventions to prevent further cuts. Denhere also appealed to well-wishers and humanitarian donors for urgent support.

“Even a little assistance can help prevent a major reduction,” he said.

Roger Shamavu, Executive Director of Dzaleka Children Relief Services (CRS), described the situation as a life-threatening crisis and called for immediate action from humanitarian organisations, governments, and global donors.

“The suspension of food assistance will be catastrophic,” said Shamavu. “We urgently need support. At the same time, we urge the UN Refugee Agency to expand income-generating programs to help refugees sustain themselves.”

Without swift action, thousands of refugees at Dzaleka risk falling deeper into hunger and insecurity.
