Inua Advocacy Marks Four Years of Impact in Malawi Refugee Rights

On April 27, 2025, Inua Advocacy celebrated its fourth anniversary, reflecting on significant strides made in advancing refugee rights in Malawi. The organization has provided legal aid, emergency support, and campaigned for legislative reform, notably advocating for the amendment of the 1989 Refugee Act, which restricts refugees' rights to freedom of movement, employment, and access to public services.

A pivotal moment occurred on April 28, 2025, when two refugees, Waseme and Alevi, were granted bail after over a month in custody, thanks to pro bono legal support from Inua Advocacy. Additionally, the organization submitted a position paper to the Malawi Law Commission, proposing the repeal of the outdated Refugee Act and the enactment of new legislation that aligns with Malawi’s constitutional and international obligations.

Inua Advocacy continues to empower refugees, advocating for their rights and striving for systemic change to ensure a dignified life for all displaced individuals in Malawi.
