On 17 May 2023, the Government of Malawi initiated a controversial operation that forcibly relocated thousands of refugees from urban areas back to Dzaleka Refugee Camp. This action stripped refugees of their livelihoods, homes, and fundamental rights, leading to widespread human rights abuses, including beatings, rape, extortion, and theft. Two years later, Inua Advocacy commemorates this event by calling for justice, transparency, and accountability.
Inua Advocacy, an independent civil society organization dedicated to advocating for refugee rights in Malawi, has been at the forefront of challenging the 1989 Malawi Refugee Act, which enforces indefinite encampment and denies refugees the right to work, move freely, or integrate into society. The organization has submitted a position paper to the Malawi Law Commission, urging the repeal of the outdated Act and the enactment of new legislation that aligns with Malawi’s constitutional values and international obligations. Inua Advocacy continues to support refugees by providing legal aid, emergency relief, and advocating for policy reforms that uphold human rights.
