Chitipa, 06 June 2025 — At least 105 asylum seekers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, recently abandoned in a forest in Chitipa, are appealing to the Malawian government to fast-track efforts to relocate them to Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
Speaking to Zodiak Online, one of the asylum seekers, Tobise Emmanuel, expressed frustration over their living conditions, citing a lack of dignity and access to basic amenities. “We are being forced to share a single toilet at T/A Kameme’s office. This is not humane,” he said.
Chitipa Immigration Officer-In-Charge Benjamin Gondwe confirmed awareness of the situation, adding that officers will be dispatched to assess the conditions at Kameme.
Innocent Magambi, Chief Executive Officer of Inua Advocacy, condemned the treatment of the asylum seekers, calling it a breach of Malawi’s international obligations. This is a clear violation of the Refugee Convention and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Magambi stated.
