Refugee businesses at Dzaleka Camp in Dowa have received K5 million in capital from the Baptist Development Service, supporting four groups trained in Village Savings and Loans (VSL).

Since 2021, the church-led programme has trained 40 camp residents annually in savings and entrepreneurship to promote self-reliance.

Rev. Dalitso Matekenya, president of the Baptist Convention of Malawi, said:

“We’ve extended this support to empower them for their welfare.”

The aid arrives as international support wanes. UNHCR has only received 12% of its required budget for Malawi, while the World Food Programme reduced its monthly refugee aid to $8.60 per person.

Beneficiary Eunice Umwali shared:

“This funding allows us to put our training into practice and build our businesses.”
