Bushagane, a widow living in Dzaleka with her children, has faced many challenges. In a camp with over 57,000 refugees, space is limited, and basic services like safe sanitation are often unavailable.
For a long time, Bushagane’s family used a toilet that was little more than a shallow hole in the ground, without a roof and with an unstable door. It collapsed twice, leaving the family without privacy or safety.
This year, support from the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO) made it possible for Welthungerhilfe (WHH) to provide proper sanitation facilities for vulnerable families in the camp. Bushagane’s household was selected for urgent assistance.
WHH built a new latrine for the family. It includes a concrete slab, an attached bathroom, and a secure structure that offers privacy. The new toilet was installed opposite the spot where the old one had stood.
Through this project, GFFO and WHH are improving conditions for families in Dzaleka, with a focus on restoring safety and dignity where it has long been missing.
