The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) is reaching out to foreign‑based players with Malawian connections to strengthen the Flames national team, and one of those players has deep roots in Dzaleka.
Malango Mayele, now a striker for Monterey Bay FC in the United States, once lived in Dzaleka Refugee Camp for ten years. Originally from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mayele spent a decade in Malawi and considers it home.
“That is my dream to play for Malawi. You know what, I stayed in Malawi for 10 years; hence, I love the country and I can play for it once given a chance,” he said.
FAM President Fleetwood Haiya recently held discussions with Mayele as part of a broader initiative to engage diaspora talent. The association is leveraging Malawi’s restored dual citizenship policy to explore the eligibility of players like Mayele, Takondwa Maosa (UK), Jubril Okedina (UK), and Henri Kumwenda (USA).
FAM has officially contacted the U.S. Soccer Federation to request Mayele’s release for Malawi’s September World Cup qualifiers against Namibia and Liberia.
