Dowa Police and the Sungusungu (Dzaleka Community Policing Group) have reaffirmed their commitment to work hand in hand in promoting safety and security within Dzaleka Refugee Camp. This renewed partnership comes in response to rising crime levels and a concerning increase in road accidents involving motorcycle taxis, commonly known as kabaza.
During a community safety meeting held in Dzaleka on Tuesday, police officials raised concern over the growing number of kabaza accidents in the district. In July alone, three separate incidents were reported, claiming four lives. Children have been among the most affected, with some sustaining life-long disabilities.
Dowa Police Station Traffic Officer, Mathambeka Golozera, called on all motorcycle operators to take responsibility by wearing protective helmets, avoiding overloading, and ensuring they hold valid driving licences, insurance, and Certificates of Fitness. He further emphasised that all accidents must be reported to the police, cautioning against private settlements that leave many incidents unrecorded.
Inua Advocacy Programs Manager, Apatsa Mangwana Mhango, commended the Sungusungu for their ongoing role in community safety and urged them to continue strengthening their collaboration with the police to protect lives in Dzaleka.
Through this partnership, both Dowa Police and the Sungusungu remain committed to creating a safer environment for all residents of the camp.
