Dzaleka Camp Faces Demolition of Illegal Structures Amid Security Concerns

The Office of the Commissioner for Refugees has announced that it is awaiting funding from relevant bodies before beginning the demolition of illegal structures and undesired fences at Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District.

Commissioner General Ignacio Maulana emphasized that all construction within the camp must adhere to established standards. He noted that the planned exercise is also aimed at strengthening security, adding that occupants of the marked structures had already been notified to vacate.

Meanwhile, Michael Kayiyatsa, Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR), has urged authorities to handle the matter with caution to ensure that the rights of camp residents are not violated.

This development follows earlier warnings from the Commissioner’s office against the illegal sale of government-allocated plots within the camp, with management vowing to seize such property.
