Inua Advocacy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi Chapter, marking a significant step toward improving media coverage of refugee rights.
The agreement, signed in Lilongwe on Thursday, seeks to recognize journalists who excel in reporting on refugee issues and to equip the media with the tools and sensitivity needed to tell refugee stories with dignity and accuracy.
Speaking at the ceremony, MISA Malawi Chairperson Golden Matonga highlighted the persistent stigma and misunderstanding faced by refugees. “There is so much the media can do to promote refugee rights,” he said, urging journalists to embrace ethical and inclusive reporting.
Inua Advocacy Programs Manager, Apatsa ToDia Mangwana Mhango, emphasized that the partnership will foster constructive media engagement and joint advocacy for meaningful policy change. “By joining forces with MISA Malawi, we aim to build the capacity of journalists to report ethically and sensitively on refugee matters,” Mhango noted.
The collaboration comes at a critical time, as Malawi’s refugee population continues to face challenges linked to restrictive policies and social exclusion. By strengthening the role of the media, both organizations hope to shift narratives, promote inclusion, and advance refugee protection in the country.
