The Mennonite Brethren Transforming Lives Initiative (MB-TLI), with support from its partner Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), on Friday conducted a cash transfer exercise for new arrivals at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
The initiative is aimed at complementing efforts by the Government of Malawi and the World Food Programme (WFP) to provide food to refugees and asylum seekers living in the country.
Speaking to Yetu FM, the organisation’s Food Security and Conservation Agriculture Advisor for Zambia and Malawi, Tiza Zyambo, said the programme is helping to bridge existing food security gaps for newly arrived refugees at Dzaleka. He said the initiative considers the vulnerability of new arrivals and ensures they have money to buy food.
Zyambo disclosed that each individual is receiving K19,200. The programme is targeting between 200 and 400 newly registered arrivals per household.
Yetu FM has also observed that Dzaleka receives new arrivals on a daily basis. However, only vulnerable groups are benefiting from the exercise, depending on the availability of resources. These include families with many children, people with chronic illnesses, and persons living with disabilities.
