A new theatre production titled Until I Afford Soap is set to premiere on February 28, 2026, at Madsoc Theatre in Lilongwe, with additional shows on March 1, 7, and 8. The play is the result of a creative collaboration between Norwegian playwright Sunniva Roligheten and Malawi’s Mwezi Arts.
The story follows four curious children who befriend Amos, a mysterious man living alone in a swamp-side shack. What begins as innocent exploration gradually reveals deeper issues around youth ambition, unemployment, dignity, and the impact of limited sexual and reproductive health rights.
The production features a youthful cast of more than eight actors selected through open auditions held late last year. Leading the ensemble is well‑known Malawian actor Theodore Pleasant Banda, recognized for his roles in Waiting for Godot, Bwabwawala, and Nyambose Goes to Town. He is joined by emerging talents including Duwa Thandiwe Mambo, Tinashe Assah Walani, Theoklaus Mkandawire, and Exauce Mfuni Ngoy, a young Congolese actor from Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
The play is co‑produced by Roligheten and Hazel Musochera of Mwezi Arts, and directed by award‑winning Malawian theatre-maker Stanley Mambo, known for his physical and experimental style.
Roligheten, recognized in Norway as one of the country’s most promising young authors, was inspired to bring this project to Malawi after participating in the 2025 Theatre Renaissance Cabaret, an international festival hosted by Mwezi Arts.
With its blend of storytelling, youthful energy, and cross‑cultural collaboration, Until I Afford Soap is expected to be a highlight of the theatre season — and a proud moment for the Dzaleka creative community.
