MHRC, Department for Refugees Hold Workshop on Redress Mechanisms at Dzaleka

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC), working with the Department for Refugees, held a workshop on 13 March 2025 at Manac Lodge in Dowa focusing on redress mechanisms for refugee protection. The activity forms part of an EU‑funded project aimed at strengthening human rights systems for refugees in Malawi.

The workshop brought together 50 participants, including Dzaleka Refugee Camp leaders, camp security personnel (sungu sungu), officers from the Dzaleka Police Unit, and representatives from religious organisations operating within the camp.

During the session, MHRC highlighted the importance of ensuring that refugees have clear and accessible pathways for reporting grievances when their rights are violated. The discussions also addressed the need for stronger accountability among duty bearers and improved coordination between government departments and human rights institutions. Participants further noted the importance of peaceful coexistence among different ethnic groups, regions, and nationalities within the camp.

Several issues were raised throughout the workshop. Participants pointed to the need for a more comprehensive conflict‑resolution mechanism within the camp and expressed concern over recurring disagreements among camp leaders. They also highlighted ongoing land disputes, including cases where refugees bypass procedures in land acquisition and construction. There were calls to revive Peace and Land Committees to support conflict management efforts, and faith leaders were encouraged to promote peace, diversity, and tolerance in their teachings.

MHRC acknowledged the European Union for its continued support in strengthening human rights protections and improving accountability systems affecting refugees in Malawi.
