Universities Plant 1,500 Trees at Dzaleka to Restore Environment

A tree planting initiative led by Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) has resulted in 1,500 trees being planted at Dzaleka Refugee Camp.

The activity was carried out through the Transforming African Agricultural Universities to Meaningfully Contribute to Africa's Growth and Development (TAGDev 2.0) project, which promotes agricultural innovation, community development, and environmental conservation across Africa.

According to TAGDev Project Coordinator at MUST, Petros Chigwechokha, the initiative was important because many areas of Dzaleka have little vegetation. Planting trees will help restore greenery and improve the surrounding environment.

Malawi’s Commissioner for Refugees, Ignacio Maulana, welcomed the effort and encouraged more organisations to support environmental initiatives in and around the camp. He also highlighted the need for reforestation at Kongwe Forest Reserve.
