Refugee Rights Activist Commends MUST for Introducing Scholarships for Refugee Students

Refugee rights advocate and Inua Advocacy Executive Director Innocent Magambi has praised the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) for rolling out scholarship opportunities designed specifically for refugee learners. He said the initiative marks an important shift in widening access to higher education for young people living in displacement.

Magambi shared his remarks after an orientation session held at Dzaleka Secondary School, where MSCE holders were briefed on how they can apply for the programme. He noted that many refugees have struggled for years to pursue tertiary studies due to documentation barriers and limited opportunities.

He described the scholarships as a meaningful humanitarian effort that recognises the challenges refugees face, especially those unable to obtain convention travel documents.

In a separate interview, Dr. Duncane Batizani, Assistant Registrar for Academics at MUST under the TAGDev 2.0 programme, said the scholarships form part of a broader initiative supported by the UNHCR to expand education access for displaced communities.

He explained that the orientation targeted refugee students who completed their MSCE within the last three academic years and are interested in continuing to university level. Batizani added that the programme also aims to ease documentation hurdles so that qualified candidates are not left out.

One of the students who attended the session, Niyonguru Samuel from Rwanda, said the opportunity has renewed hope for many young refugees who aspire to study further and contribute to Malawi’s development.
