Dowa Set for Football Excitement as MK3 Million Fikiri Issa Bonanza Kicks Off

Residents of Dowa and surrounding areas are set to experience a new wave of football excitement following the launch of the Fikiri Issa Bonanza, a tournament valued at over MK3 million and organised by the Dzaleka Sporting Association.

Speaking to Yetu Radio, Chairperson of the Dzaleka Sporting Association, Christian Babwine, said the competition will introduce one of the biggest football prizes the area has seen, with MK1 million set aside for the winning team, alongside individual awards.

“Just imagine, the player who scores the most goals, the best player of the tournament and the best goalkeeper will all receive cash prizes and medals,” Babwine said.

General Secretary for Fikiri Issa Bonanza, Mr. Alain, said the tournament is designed to promote football development and nurture young talent within Dzaleka and neighbouring communities.

“It is our desire to see young people go far with their talents, especially in football. This is how we have started and, if the tournament progresses according to plan, there are thoughts of establishing two tournaments every year,” he said.

On officiating, Babwine said the Dowa Referees Association has been assigned to manage matches to ensure professionalism and proper conduct throughout the competition.

Dzaleka Sporting Association Tournament Officer Gylain Abekya also called on supporters and participating teams to maintain discipline during the event, particularly at the opening ceremony, in order to uphold the spirit of the game and respect for invited guests.

The Fikiri Issa Bonanza has attracted eight teams from Dzaleka Refugee Camp and surrounding areas. The opening match is scheduled for Sunday, 17 May 2026, between Mponela FC and Kalembelembe at DAPP Ground in Dowa.
