New Partnership Expands Legal Support for Dzaleka Residents

Residents of Dzaleka are set to benefit from increased access to legal representation following a new partnership between Prison Justice Initiatives (PJI) and Inua Advocacy.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday at Inua Advocacy’s office in Dzaleka, with both organisations committing to work together to improve access to justice for refugees and asylum seekers living in the settlement.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, PJI Executive Director Patrisio Matambo said the organisation is ready to support Dzaleka residents by providing legal representation and ensuring that vulnerable individuals have a fair opportunity to defend themselves in court.

Matambo noted that many refugees face significant challenges in accessing legal services, particularly when accused of offences, often because they lack legal representation.

“Over the years, we have assisted several individuals from Dzaleka. This partnership with Inua Advocacy is an important step in strengthening that support and ensuring more people can access justice,” he said.

Inua Advocacy welcomed the partnership, describing it as a timely intervention that will help address a critical gap in legal assistance within the community.

Brenda Buliyani, Communications Officer for Inua Advocacy, said the collaboration will expand the organisation’s reach and strengthen efforts to protect the rights of refugees.

“This partnership will help ensure that the rights of people living in Dzaleka are respected and that individuals facing legal proceedings have access to representation,” Buliyani said.

She added that legal representation remains one of the areas where many refugees struggle to find support, making the involvement of PJI particularly significant.

Under the agreement, Prison Justice Initiatives will work through Inua Advocacy to provide legal assistance and court representation for Dzaleka residents who require support navigating Malawi’s justice system.

The partnership is expected to increase access to legal services and strengthen efforts to promote fair treatment and due process for refugees and asylum seekers living in Dzaleka.
