The Department for Refugees has called on people living in Dzaleka Refugee Camp and nearby host communities to take greater responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.
The appeal was made during a community clean-up exercise held in the camp on Thursday. The activity brought together the Department for Refugees, Welthungerhilfe, Dzaleka Health Centre and other organisations working with refugees.
Speaking to Yetu FM, Department for Refugees Works Supervisor Blessings Kiposa said proper sanitation can help prevent diseases including cholera, diarrhoea and typhoid.
He said households should dispose of waste properly and make cleanliness part of their daily routine.
“Cleanliness starts with each individual. Every household has a role to play in ensuring that waste is properly disposed of and the environment remains clean,” Kiposa said.
He added that cleaning the camp should not be left to government departments or humanitarian organisations. Residents of the camp and surrounding communities must also take part.
The exercise was organised as part of efforts to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of communicable diseases in Dzaleka.
