Twenty-four-year-old Niyonkuru Samuel, a Rwandan refugee living in Dzaleka, is pursuing another opportunity to enter university through the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi Bridging Scholarship Program.

Samuel arrived at the Malawi University of Science and Technology four weeks ago and has been taking part in intensive academic lessons ahead of examinations scheduled for August 24, 2026.

He had previously been selected to study at the University of Malawi after passing the Malawi School Certificate of Education examinations in 2024. However, financial difficulties prevented him from taking up the place.

With no other option at the time, Samuel began teaching at a school in Dzaleka while waiting for another opportunity to continue his education.

He later joined the FAWEMA Bridging Scholarship Program and was selected to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences after passing examinations.

“Being at MUST has given me another chance to achieve my dream. I am learning every day, and I am working hard because I want to pass my examinations and secure my place at the university,” Samuel said.

He said opportunities such as the bridging scholarship are rare for young people living in refugee camps.

Samuel is now preparing for the August examinations as he works towards securing his place at the university.

FAWEMA is implementing the scholarship program with public universities in Malawi, with support from the Mastercard Foundation.
