The Parliamentary Committee on International Relations has pledged to work with relevant stakeholders to address challenges facing refugees and asylum seekers at Dzaleka.

Vice Chairperson of the committee Frank Mwenefumbo made the remarks on Tuesday during a visit to the camp.

The visit was aimed at assessing the situation at Dzaleka following concerns over reduced support from development partners.

Mwenefumbo said refugees and asylum seekers at the camp are facing serious challenges.

He said the committee will engage aid agencies to establish why support to Dzaleka has declined or been cut and explore ways of addressing the situation.

Mwenefumbo also said the committee will consider the needs of the surrounding host community.

Deputy Commissioner for Refugees in the Department of Refugees Ivy Mpina Chihana said the visit gave lawmakers an opportunity to see the challenges facing the camp.

Chihana appealed to the committee to lobby for increased assistance through Parliament to help address challenges affecting refugees, asylum seekers and the surrounding host community.
