Welthungerhilfe (WHH) Malawi has highlighted the impact of funding cuts on water, sanitation and hygiene services at Dzaleka following a visit by participants in the WHH 2026 WASH Conference.

The visit took place on the third day of the conference and gave participants an opportunity to see how WASH services are being managed at the camp.

According to WHH Malawi, the camp has been affected by funding cuts that have had an impact on WASH services.

In response, WHH has introduced a community-led water point management system, with committees established to take responsibility for managing water points.

The approach gives members of the community a greater role in the management of water services at the camp.

WHH Malawi said the visit also helped participants understand the importance of WASH services for people living in protracted emergency settings.

The organisation said community involvement in managing WASH interventions has become increasingly important as Dzaleka continues to face funding challenges.

The visit formed part of activities under the WHH 2026 WASH Conference.
