Today, Dzaleka Refugee Camp welcomed Ms. Elizabeth Lewis, Senior Policy Analyst for Sub-Saharan Africa, and Ms. Joan O’Donnell Condon, Director for Foreign Assistance and senior staff member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The visit followed last week’s engagement by the US State Department, showing growing US interest in Malawi’s refugee response.
The delegation met with the Government of Malawi, UNHCR, WFP, and refugee leaders. Discussions focused on urgent challenges:
- Food shortages, with assistance projected to end in October.
- A 36% increase in malnutrition.
- Overcrowding and rising security concerns.
Refugees shared their concerns about education, livelihoods, and safety, while also expressing their determination to build a better future.
The visitors stressed the importance of lasting solutions, including turning refugee settlements into economic hubs that benefit both refugees and host communities.
